The MYTTON finally registered their first point of the season at the sixth time of asking on a eventful Friday night of darts in the latest round of matches played in the CRF (UK) Limited Shrewsbury Premier Darts League. Away at the HEATHGATES, it was the home side that drew first blood when veteran Bob Wynn (20.90) defeated 15 year old rookie Tom Pope(18.25) 2-1. There would be further home wins for A Donnelly (17.63) & I Evans (22.77) but the Mytton responded with singles wins for T Williams (20.04), M Pope(26.37) & G Thomas (27.83). Glyn was in fine form firing in a 16 dart 501 leg as well as hitting a Maximum 180, a feat team mate J Carter also achieved. With the singles matches shared the final outcome of the match would be decided by the remaining two pairs matches, the first going the way of the visitors (Thomas & Ed Price) before Heathgates (Donnelly & Evans) rescued a point for the home side with 4 v 4 overall score that sees the Mytton move of the bottom of the league.
Another seasons first was to happen at the BROOKLANDS who entertained WHEATSHEAF , although this time’s first would see the Meole Brace side fall to their first defeat of the season as the Wheatsheaf finally realised their potential with the team performance of the night. Both sides shared 180s with J Chaplin firing one for the visitors whilst Brooklands Matt Elsey responding for the hosts. Indeed Matt recorded the highest one dart average of the night (27.08) and was backed up with further home wins for J Davies (21.32) & S O’Callaghan(21.76). The Wheatsheaf replied with single wins for A Hilditch (22.77), D Lewis (22.27) & C Scott (18.85) as again both sides were locked at 3 v 3 following the culmination of the singles. However it would be the visitors that would triumph in both doubles matches to send the points back to Frankwell, as they moved up to ninth in the league.
At the top of the league, third placed COMPASSES Dithertington travelled to leaders MASONIC where the spoils would be shared in a titanic encounter. The visitors soon found themselves 3 – 1 up thanks to wins for Jon Mansell (23.85), S Towers (29.47) & Dave Pallet (33.40) who included a 180 using just 30 darts to win his match 2-0. The Masonic are not top by chance and thought back with wins for Dan Dean (22.26 inc 180), V Owens (21.32) & Paul Rowley (32.32) who used one more dart than Dave winning his singles match 2-0 using just 31 darts. The quality darts were far from over as again the culmination of the singles saw the match tied at three & again the Comp Dith drew first blood with a 2-0 pairs win for Pallet and T Middleton, however the match was squared in dramatic fashion with Masonic’s Paul Rowley firing the perfect 8 darts (180-180-72 checkout) in his visit’s during the last leg of the match that finished 4 v 4.
Closing the lead at the top to one point were 2nd placed CROWN who laboured to a 5 v 3 victory at tenth placed ROCK & FOUNTAIN. This would be a match where the ladies would take centre stage. Firstly, Rock’s Steph Clarke (21.78) pitched the weeks best individual performance defeating Crowns G Booth 2–0 (You have to throw well to beat Gordon 2 zip), before Crown’s Sarah Roberts continued who recent fine form averaging 28.63 per dart in a pivotal 2-0 win to put the Crown 4 – 2 up going into the pairs. J Roberts & M Jones eventually saw the Crown home in the first pairs to give the Crown victory which sets up this Fridays home game against league leaders Masonic.
The all Baschurch encounter saw unbeaten ADMIRAL DUNCAN A edge past ADMIRAL DUNCAN B 5 V 3 to move into third place. Kev Rogers (20.87) set the A team on the way in a singles victory that included the weeks highest checkout of 110 & this was followed up with wins for team mates M Coyne (21.32), S Dockery (23.30) & D Beesty (20.65). Duncan B responded with singles wins for S Pryce (22.31) & S Ball (16.16) whist ED Jones pitched a 180 but the overall match was settled in the first pairs when Duncan As S Dockerty & M Coyne emerged victorious 2-1 to condemn the Duncan B to their fourth defeat of the season.
Remaining in the North of the county & RED CASTLE are now unbeaten in three following their home match against BEECHES. An impressive demonstration of firepower from the Red Castle saw them record an overall one dart average of 22.90 in the singles matches as surged into a 5 v 1 lead, with wins for M Price (23.30), K Williams (22.77), N Pritchard (24.44), A Jones (22.40) & D Coulson (27.83). All bar A Jones game was won 2-0 although P Andrews did gain a consolation game for the Beeches (17.27) which also included a 180 in a 2-1 victory over P Vickers who himself hit a 180 maximum. Beeches S Tweddle also recorded a 180 as they continued to fight and were rewarded with wins in both pairs where Stewart Turner in particular impressed scoring 100 + on each visit before checking out both finishes on his first visit.
Finally, and CHARLES DARWIN returned to winning ways when they entertained WOODMAN. The early exchanges saw each side cancelled out with M Gray (26.05 ) & S Knight (28.67) on the score sheet for the hosts whilst the Woodman replied with wins for A Peach (24.01) & Sward ( 23.56). Unfortunately the visitors could only field five players and this was to prove critical as the Darwin capitalised as they didn’t yield another game and it was left to Nathan Morris & M Gray to lead the Darwin to overall Victory. Gray included a 180 maximum, the 13th of the evening in all seven matches of another compelling night of darts.
An incredible 17 Maximum 180s were fired in a dramatic Fifth week of the CRF (UK) Limited Shrewsbury Premier Darts League. Leading the way was ADMIRAL DUNCAN A’s Scott Dockerty (One dart av 33.40) who plundered Three maximums as he team triumphed 7 v 1 at the BEECHES, Bayston Hill. Team mate Mike Coyne (26.37) also impressed as the Duncan remain one of only two teams who are currently unbeaten as they sit third place overall in the league. Dave Perks (16.98) was the solitary winner for the hosts who fell to their third consecutive defeat.
Indeed ADMIRAL DUNCAN B ensured it was an excellent night for the Baschurch sides recording a 6 v 2 home win against the HEATHGATES, in what was their first win of the season. Sean Jones (23.54) set the Duncan on the way with a fine 2-1 win over “Gates” Bob Wynn (20.67). Both players registered 180s as did Duncan’s Ed Jones (21.29) whilst team mate Ash Gough (23.47) again impressed. For the visitors, I Evans (21.32) & debutant S Senior (22.77) triumphed in the singles but back to back pairs wins for the Duncan B saw the home side prevail as they move up to 10th place in the league just two places behind the Heathgates.
Bottom played top when the MYTTON entertained MASONIC and for long periods of the match you would have been hard pressed to tell who was in which position as the lead fluctuated. 15 year old Tom Pope (18.93) & Ernie Price (19.37) won for the hosts whilst Jim Elsey fired a 180 for the Masonic, with team mates P Rowley (27.83) & S Farmer (24.44) excelling in the singles. When Price & G Thomas won the first pairs for the Mytton the match was delicately poised 4 v 3 in favour of the Masonic going into the last pairs, which itself would be settled by a deciding leg won by V Owens & S Farmer to ensure the Masonic remained unbeaten, two points clear at the top. Hard lines on the Mytton who suffered their fourth consecutive 5 v 3 reverse.
The CROWN bounced back from last week’s 7 v 1 reverse in emphatic style when they entertained high flying CHARLES DARWIN where this time the Abbey Foregate side would enjoy a 7 v 1 home win. Crowns John Roberts (25.74) enjoyed a crackerjack of a match against Darwin’s Shane Knight (25.70) where the players fired three 180s with Johns two to Shane’s one reflecting the overall game score. Shane did however record a 15 dart 501 leg, whilst team mate Sam Hamilton (23.33) 2-0 success put the Darwin on the board. Mark Jones (26.33) & D Lane (22.98) put the Crown in ascendancy before Sarah Roberts (29.47) produced a stunning brace of 17 darters to seal a fine win for the Crown who’s overall one dart team average was a very impressive 24.50 per dart.
Snapping on the heels of the Crown are third placed COMPASSES who enjoyed a comfortable 6 v 2 home win against ROCK & FOUNTAIN. Comps Rob Kotsch set the Dithertington side on the way with a splendid 160 checkout that followed by a 104 outshot by teammate James Mansell. Brother John Mansell (24.44), not to be outdone, hit a 180 as the Compasses raced to a 5 v 0 lead. Rocks Matt Hyde (18.57) stopped the rot before both sides claimed a pairs win each as leg difference only keeps the Comp in third place. The Rock fall to tenth place overall.
The BROOKLANDS returned to winning ways when they emerged from the WOODMAN 5 V 3 victorious, although they had to come from behind after M Walker (17.43), which included a 114 out shot, put the Coton Hill side one up. That was as good as it got for the home side as the visitors responded with fine wins for J Davies (25.69 inc 180), M Elsey (24.44 inc 2 180s) & S’O Callaghan (23.30). . M Elsey & S’O Callaghan would then team up to win the final pairs to give the Brooklands the points that see them up to fifth whilst the Woodman remain one of the bottom sitting on one point.
Finally, the RED CASTLE, without their talismanic captain Dave Price, enjoyed a fine 6 v 2 win away at the WHEATSHEAF to record their second win of the season. Matt Price ( 24.20) put the Castle in the driving seat with a superb 156 checkout & there was further singles success for Castle’s Nick Pritchard (24.63 inc 180) & D Coulson (22.53) whilst the home side responded through Ash Hilditch (26.37) who heads the individual players league with five wins from five & J Chaplin (23.37), however successive pairs wins for the Castle saw them return to Harmer Hill with the points whilst the Wheatsheaf have gone four games without a win.
Arguably the performance of the fourth week CRF UK Ltd Shrewsbury Premier Darts league came at the RED CASTLE where visitors WOODMAN gained there first point of the season in see saw match that eventually ended 4 v 4. Arran Peach (21.32) impressed for the visitors winning 2-0 & there were also wins for S Snelson, & M Cank before S Snelson & J Guntrip teamed up to put the Coton Hill side 4 v 3 up with one to play only for Red Castle “Axis” of Nick Pritchard & Derek Coulson to win the last game for the hosts. Earlier Nick had plundered a match winning 26.37 av and there were other singles wins for Castles K Williams & P Vickers as they consolidate their 8th position in the league.
ROCK & FOUNTAIN gained their first win of the season at the expense of the unfortunate MYTTON, who have now endured their third consecutive 5 v 3 reverse of the season as they remain anchored at the bottom of the league waiting for their first point. Rocks G Wall & A Perkins both registered MAXIMUMS and were joined by Ryan Kenny in registering singles wins and it would be Perkins & Kenny who paired up to win the decisive doubles game 2-0 to give the Rock the points. Laurence Colley (21.55) again impressed for Mytton.
At the top of the league, the only 100 % winning record belongs to the MASONIC who were pushed all way by ADMIRAL DUNCAN B in an entertaining encounter in Coleham. Plaudits for man of the match belong to Duncan Bs Ed Jones with a superb 30.36 one dart average whilst team mate Shaun Pryce (22.75) pushed Masonic’s Jim Elsey (26.75) all the way before losing out 2-1. Jim fired in a maximum 180 as the Masonic established a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish running out 7-1 winners with W Arthur (23.81) & P Rowley (26.6) also impressing for the hosts.
A 7 v 1 scoreline was also the outcome as the CROWN who entertained COMPASSES dithering ton, and it would be the way side that would leave with the points in a game that was much closer than the final scoreline suggests. Leading the way for the visitors was John Mansell (27.58) who fired a brilliant 13 dart 501 leg whilst team mate Scott Towers checked out 127 on the bull with his opponent poised for the kill. Indeed five of the seven matches went the full three leg distance but it was left to the final pairs match before the home side were to register a score with Jeff Uncles proving lethal on the doubles. The Crown are now joined on six points by Comp Dith two points behind the leaders Masonic.
The third team sitting on six points are CHARLES DARWIN who just edged out visitors BROOKLANDS 5 V 3. Pivotal 2-1 singles victories for Darwin’s Shane Knight (25.47) & Sam Hamilton (22.97) who would pair up to win the final doubles match to clinch the overall victory against a Brooklands side who fired in THREE maximums (S Hollinger, G McDonnell & M Elsey). Ironically all three players would lose their singles games but there were wins for Brooklands J Davies (22.44) & S O Callaghan (24.25) as the Brooklands remain fifth overall on five points.
DUNCAN A recorded here third 4 v 4 score of the season as they entertained mid table WHEATSHEAF who had to settle for a second consecutive draw in another absorbing encounter. In a night of maximums, Wheatsheaf’s Ash Hilditch (27.83) hit two whilst team mate Jamie Chaplin (23.35) also impressed & the two players combined in the final pairs to earn a point for the Wheatsheaf. Duncan As Scott Docherty (26.36), Mike Coyne (22.03) & Kev Rogers (21.32) all won for the hosts with Kev checking out on 123 but it’s just One win or four for the Baschurch outfit now.
The final game of the night saw the HEATHGATES entertain the BEECHES in a game that saw another two Maximums hit. Dave Perks for the Beeches with Adam Donnelly replying for the Gates. Steve Tweddle (19.57) was the only singles victor for the Beeches as B Wynn, A Donnelly, A Watkins, P Atter & S Guyatt all recorded 20 + winning averages for the home side as the Heathgates consolidate their mid table position.
CHARLES DARWIN returned to winning ways with an excellent 6 v 2 win away at previously unbeaten COMPASSES Dithertington. Darwin’s Michael Gray set the tone for the visitors, going on first & winning 2-0 (28.63). Team mates D Humphries (22.77), S Knight (25.48) & S Hamilton (27.08) carried on the good. The hosts responded with single wins for Jon Mansell (22.91) & S Towers to keep the match alive going into the pairs but that was as good as it got for the home side with Darwin wining both games 2-0 to claim the points.
A similar score line was the order of the day at unbeaten BROOKLANDS who retained their dark horses tag to inflict a first defeat on RED CASTLE. The key fifth match of the night proved pivotal with Brooklands Matt Elsey (25.20) defeating Castles Nick Pritchard (23.05) 2 – 1. Team mates Steve O’Callaghan (22.27), J Davies (20.04) & inform Gav McDonnell (20.66) claimed victories whilst the visitors had D Coulson & Kev Williams (24.44) to thank for again keeping the match alive going into the pairs, but this time the home side prevailed in the final matches to prevail 6 v 2.
Arguably the match of night, and to this point the season took place in Baschurch between ADMIRAL DUNCAN B’s Ash Gough (28.12 & ROCK & FOUNTAINS Ryan Kenny (27.46), with the overall score poised at 4 v 1 to the visitors, Ryan must have thought he had done enough to secure the win for the visitors with a performance that would have won most games this season only for Ash to fire two 180s in a 2-1 victory that kept the Duncan in the match. Yet again both doubles matches would be won by the same side, this time the Duncan B, to ensure both clubs a share of the spoils in a 4 v 4 final score and both teams first points of the season.
Early mid table sides WHEATSHEAF & HEATHGATES also battled out a draw in Frankwell. Jake Elsey (20.88) set the Wheatsheaf on their way with a memorable first ever league win over veteran Bob Wynn and there were further home wins for Jamie Chaplin (22.27) & Ash Hilditch (27.08). Ash fired in a maximum 180, one of three in the match with Heathgates Phil Atter & Adam Donnelly also hitting maximums. Indeed both players recorded singles wins for the Heathgates along with Ian Evans 7 it was Adam who put in a man of the match performance defeating county player Dave Lewis 2-1 recording an impressive 26.88 one dart average as both teams settled for a share of the points.
ADMIRAL DUNCAN A condemned hosts WOODMAN to their third consecutive 6 v 2 defeat of the season as the Baschurch side notched their first win of the season. Scott Docherty 26.36 put the away side in the driving seat defeating in form M Grocott (20.94) and there were further wins for Kev Rogers, J Kynaston & M Coyne who included a 136 checkout in his 2-1 win. Woodman’s Arran Peach (19.70) was the solitary winner for the Woodman who now find themselves bottom of the league.
At the other end of the table MASONIC consolidated there 2nd place with a comfortable 7 v 1 away at the BEECHES. Masonic’s Steve Farmer signalled his intent for the season with another 29 + average which would have been higher had he not hit the 25 with his last dart when throwing for the magic 170 checkout, having hit the first two treble twenties. Indeed the Masonic won all six single matches with both Paul Rowley & Jim Elsey hitting 23 + averages. Jim then was part of a lethal partnership , teaming up with Josh Woodman in the pairs. Requiring 285, Jim hit 177 to leave Josh 108 which he checked out in style to underline the potential this pairing has in town for years to come. The Beeches last pairing of A Stubbs & M Rogers staved off the whitewash winning 2-1 to give the Bayston Hill side a consolation point.
Finally, the CROWN continue to set the pace at the top following a 5 v 3 victory away at the MYTTON. The match was settled after the singles games with the Crown triumphing in five of the six singles games 2-0 all averaging over 20. Both John Roberts (180) and Gordon Booth fired in 25.69 averages, but the Mytton refused to wilt, winning the final two pairs matches with 15 year old Tom Pope in particular impressing, one of a number of teenagers that have featured at the start of this season.
The Second week of the Shrewsbury Premier Darts league, sponsored by CRF (UK) Limited through up some intriguing clashes, none more so than at the CHARLES DARWIN, where visitors RED CASTLE produced the eye catching performance of the night recording an excellent 6 v 2 away win. The Darwin, playing their first game at home since moving from the Compasses Bayston Hill last season, soon found themselves behind, inspired by Red Castles in from duo of Nick Pritchard (29.47 one dart av) & Derek Coulson (22.27) who both won in singles before teaming up in the pairs to win the key match. For the Darwin, Sam Hamilton (27.08 av) impressed in the singles, but the final game of the night saw teenager Leon Wragg make a winning debut in the pairs to help Red Castle seal an impressive win.
Current champions MASONIC maintained their strong start to the season with consecutive 6 v 2 victories, this time at home to the WHEATSHEAF. Masonic’s Paul Rowley (26.36) & Dan Dean (22.81) were in fine form but the highlight of the night came in the second game of the match when Masonic’s Jim Elsey took on Wheat sheaf’s Jake Elsey in the league’s first ever father v son match. Father Jim prevailed 2–0 but there is enough to suggest we will be hearing a lot more about Jake as he attempts to follow in his father large footsteps.
The CROWN were again in ruthless mood as they entertained ADMIRAL DUNCAN B, and Crown debutant Mark Jones matched team mate John Roberts previous weeks 34.55 average as he included a 180 in a 2–0 defeat against in form Ed Jones. Few would of have had a debut as impressive as this which equals the league’s third highest average in history. John Roberts (27.08) also plundered a 14 dart leg & Gordon Booth (24.44) sealed the win for the Crown in comprehensive style 7 v 1 overall. This after the Duncan B had the led the match overall with Sean Jones going on first winning 2-1 with a fine 112 checkout.
Having spent last season anchored to the bottom of the league the BEECHES recorded their first away victory for over a year with a splendid 5 v 3 win over the ROCK & FOUNTAIN. Buoyed by singles wins for Beeches trio M Rogers, R Williams & P Anchors the Rock hit back with victories for R Kenny and Andy Perkins who impressed on debut. The pivotal six singles game saw Beeches Dave Perks defeat Steph Clarke 2-0 and there was no way back for the Rock who now sit one place below the Beeches in the league.
COMPASSES Dithertington maintained their steady start to the season with a hard earned 5 v 3 home win over MYTTON. Comp Dith Tony Middleton put in a man of the match performance winning 2-0 with a superb 27.83 average backed up by the Mansell brothers who both pitched 22 + averages. The Mytton responded with fines win for Glyn Thomas (24.71) & Martin Pope (25.05) as the overall match was in the balance going into the doubles games, which the high side prevailed 2-1 in both to condemn the Mytton to the second consecutive 5 v 3 defeat.
The BROOKLANDS cemented fourth place overall with a hard fought 4 v 4 draw away at the ADMIRAL DUNCAN A in an excellent match the saw the overall lead change four times. Duncan A’ Scott Docherty (25.69) & Jamie Kynaston (21.32) shone for the hosts whist Brooklands M Elsey & Steve O Callaghan pitching 21 + average as the singles matches finished 3-3. All four mentioned players were involved in the first pairs match that went the way of the Brooklands 2-1 only for the Duncan’s M Coyne & D Beesty to triumph in the final match of the night to ensure a share of the spoils and the Baschurch sides consecutive 4 v 4 draw.
Finally, the HEATHGATES gained their first win of the season with a solid 6 v 2 home over the WOODMAN. Bob Wynn (22.26) set the Gates on the way backed up with wins for P Atter & I Evans before S Guyatt (23.86) sealed the win for the home side. Mark Grocott again impressed for the Woodman winning both the singles (20.44) & pairs, but the Coton Hill side fell to their second 6 v 2 reverse of the season.
The seventh season of the Shrewsbury Premier Darts league, sponsored by CRF (UK) Limited, began last Friday with the CROWN signalling their intent with 8 v 0 demolition of hosts BEECHES. Keen to avenge last season’s 5 v 3 reverse in this fixture, the Crown led by John Roberts making a welcome return, who triumphed 2 v 0 against county player Roger Williams with legs of 14 & 15 darts (34.55 one dart average), that included two 180s. Team mates Gordon Booth (119 checkout) & Darren Lane also impressed triumphing 2 v 0 with respective 26.36 & 22.99 averages. Despite the score line the a much changed Beeches side didn’t give, Dave Perks fired out a 107 checkout and could consider themselves unlucky not to register a win.
Fine margins were the order of the day at Habberley where the MYTTON entertained CHARLES DARWIN with five of the six singles matches going the three leg distance. Unfortunately for the hosts, Charles Darwin emerged victorious in all five matches 2 v 1, the pick of the games saw Michael Gray defeating Glyn Thomas with both players averaging over 25 per dart. The remaining singles match saw Mytton Wayne Davies win 2 v 0 with an impressive 23.86 average on debut. The remaining pairs matches went the visitors way as Charles Darwin secured a very impressive 7 v 1 win at the Mytton, not many teams will come away from Habberley with that sort of win.
Current champions MASONIC began their campaign with 6 v 2 victory away at determined WOODMAN, and it was a case of another newcomer making a significant impression to the match. It’s not every day a team can call on the services of a former England international but Steve Farmer became the second England player to throw in the Shrewsbury Premier League and he didn’t disappoint defeating Mark Grocott (25.42) 2 v 1 in an absorbing match with a 29.08 average and I suspect there is plenty more of that to come. Team mate Jim Elsey (26.37) also impressed and both Steve & Jim pitched 14 dart legs. For the Woodman, Arran Peach (23.30) continued his fine form and the Woodman could take a number of positives from a spirited performance against a very good side.
Highly fancied COMPASSES DITHERINGTON also enjoyed a 6 v 2 success away from home at the ADMIRAL DUNCAN B in WHICH FOUR Comp players (Rob Kotsch, S Towers, T Middleton & James Mansell) all triumphed with 21 + averages. Ironically Jon Mansell topped all four team mates averages with a 26.21 av but lost 2 v 0 to current player of the year Ed Jones who shone again with a 28.63 av & Ed s would team up with Shaun Pryce to win in the pairs to give the final score a respectable look.
The fifth away win of the night saw this seasons dark horses, BROOKLANDS emerge with the points in a rearranged match at the HEATHGATES. Impressive wins for G McDonnell (24.38) J Davies (24.44), M Elsey (21.32) & Soxy (24.44) put the Brooklands in a commanding position after the singles. Wins for Heathgates I Evans (14 dart leg) and Ali Watkins kept the home side in the match until the pairs but two 2 v 1 wins for the Brooklands in the doubles saw the Meole Brace side triumph 6 v 2 over the Gates.
The only home win of the night came at the WHEATSHEAF who entertained ROCK & FOUNTAIN, and the visitors soon found themselves 2 v 0 up with wins I Hutchings & M Hyde, but a man of the match performance by in form Ash Hilditch (27.88) which included a fine 127 checkout on the bull started the revival that was backed up by home wins for J Chaplin (23.30) D Lewis (21.78) & C Scott (20.45). Both sides won a pairs match 2 v 0 which saw the Sheaf emerge 5 v 3 winners.
Last but by no means least saw the two teams from the Northern territories do battle in the local derby at the RED CASTLE and it was visitors DUNCAN A who drew first blood with Kev Rogers (21.78) recording a fine 2 -0 over Matt Price. The match of the night followed with Castles Nick Pritchard (25.46) defeating Welsh International Scott Docherty (28.76) 2 v 1, which seemed to give the home side the impetus as they opened up a 3 v 1 overall lead, A Jones (24.10) defeating S Kynaston (23.35) in another quality match. Duncan A replied with Mike Coyne (23.30) winning 2 v 0 but when Castles Derek Coulson won the final singles game 2 - 0 the Castle had the edge 4 v 2 overall. Both pairs matches went the distance, 2 – 1 to the visitors which included a 145 checkout for Mike Coyne, whilst Castles Paul; Vickers took out 128
